Dear friends,
A wildfire of pantries, ignited by the initiative of young Filipina Ana Patricia Non, has been spreading in the Philippines. Prodded and driven by empathy and compassion for Filipinos affected by the pandemic, with high unemployment rates and hunger levels, Non put up a community pantry in Maginhawa Street, UP Village in Quezon City. More than 300 community pantries initiated by individuals and groups have been put up since then.
Inspired by the Maginhawa Community Pantry, Karapatan has been supporting at least five community pantries in Novaliches and UP Village, Quezon City and in Sampaloc, Manila since April 19, 2021.
Local leaders in poor communities of vendors, tricycle/pedicab drivers, the homeless and informal workers are leading these initiatives.
Meanwhile, families and friends of political prisoners and survivors among Marcos’ martial law victims are setting up their respective pantries in aid of political prisoners and poor communities.
