About CHRP-UK

The Campaign For Human Rights in the Philippines-UK (CHRP-UK) was set up in 2006, at a time when enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in the Philippines had sharply escalated.

Between 2016 and 2022, under the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte, an estimated 30,000 extrajudicial killings took place. A new Anti-Terrorism Law gave the police sweeping new powers to arrest and detain dissidents. Opposition to the government is labeled as “communism” and “terrorism”.

Extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture continue with impunity under the current president, and son of the old dictator, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The Philippines remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist, lawyer, human rights defender, development worker, environmentalist, activist or trade unionist.

CHRP is run entirely by volunteers and is paid for by donations and affiliations. We work closely with human rights organisations and NGOs in the Philippines and are a member of the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines. Many of our activities have been organised jointly with trade unions, MPs, environmental groups, development NGOS, church groups and other human rights organisations, such as Amnesty International, and the UK All-Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group. The need for our solidarity has never been greater than at the present under the rule of President Duterte in which the Philippines government has cast aside almost any pretense of respecting human rights.

Join Our Campaign!

CHRP-UK raises public awareness of the brutal suppression of human rights in the Philippines, through public events, engagement with policymakers, and developing links between civil society organisations in the UK and the Philippines.

CHRP is affiliated with the International Campaign for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP).
