Human Rights Day 2021 Post 2

Environmental Rights

In 2020 the Philippines recorded the 5th highest number of environment and land rights defenders killed (30 in total), which is also the highest number outside of Latin America.

Of the 30 environment and land rights defenders killed in the Philippines, half were directly linked to defenders’ opposition to mining logging and dam projects.

Even the COVID 19 pandemic became a human rights issue when President Rodrigo Duterte ordered law enforcement agents to “Shoot them dead” if people broke quarantine regulations.

Yet, President Duterte prioritised mining for economic recovery from the pandemic – allowing the industry to operate throughout 2020, as well as recently reversing a ban on open pit mining.
