Statement of Support
26 July 2019

The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) stands in solidarity with people’s rights alliance Karapatan, Rural Missionaries of the Philippines (RMP), women’s group Gabriela and the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) as they file petitions for the writ of amparo and habeas data in court.

The writ of amparo is a remedy for the protection of individual rights as members of the said organizations are currently under life threatening attacks from Philippine State forces. The habeas data is sought to find out what information is held by these forces about their person.

No less than National Security Adviser Gen. Hermogenes Esperon filed perjury charges against human rights defenders of Karapatan, RMP and Gabriela. Leaders of progressive organizations have been under incessant attacks and they need our urgent support.

We call on our international colleagues to press for the accountability of State forces in the killings and other human rights violations in the Philippines. We call for an end to the vilification, threats and attacks against activists and rights defenders. We urge the Philippine Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals to hear the just petitions of the victims and complainants.

We trust that justice will prevail as the Filipino people courageously assert themselves of their rights. Our firm solidarity reaches out to them.
