CHRP-UK condemns Maria Ressa arrest

The Campaign for Human Rights in the Philippines – United Kingdom strongly condemns the illegal arrest of award winning and leading journalist Maria Ressa in the latest attack on the media in the Philippines. These attacks by the Duterte government threaten the freedom of the press that must be defended

This form of intimidation and harassment comes after much intimidation, attacks and illegal imprisonment by President Duterte and Malacanang against human rights defenders & peace advocates.

This intimidation violates international human rights standards and must cease for all immediately. What we do know is that the Duterte regime is now desperate and will do anything to shut down the free press.

Both human rights defenders and the press are a vital part of any democracy and CHRP-UK will continue to campaign for these rights.
