ILPS condoles with victims of earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador

The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) expresses its deepest sympathy for the victims of the 2 powerful earthquakes that hit Japan and Ecuador on April 15, 2016 and April 16, 2016. Japan was hit by two earthquakes, the first one was a 6.0-magnitude earthquake while the second was 7.0 in magnitude. The quake that hit Ecuador was 7.8 in magnitude.

The earthquakes that hit the two countries occurred along what is called the Ring of Fire, a long chain of volcanoes and other tectonically active structures surrounding the Pacific rim from New Zealand all around to Chile.

The death toll in the two quakes that hit Japan has reached 41 with dozens more believed to be still buried in the rubble. More than 1,000 people have been treated for injuries. Buildings, roads and bridges were heavily damaged. There were landslides and some areas.

The earthquake in Ecuador was reportedly the most powerful since 1979. The death toll has now risen to more than 400. Another 2,500 more have suffered injuries. More than 1,500 buildings have been damaged and 18,000 people have been left spending the night in makeshift shelters. Widespread damage to infrastructure has been reported in the poor South American country. It is estimated that billions of dollars would be needed to rebuild the damage.

We, from the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) commend the neighboring countries that have already given assistance to Ecuador.

We make an appeal to the concerned UN agencies and other international bodies to help in the rescue and relief efforts especially to the people of Ecuador who have been the most seriously affected by the disaster and in most need of assistance.

We likewise call on member organizations of ILPS in Latin America to do whatever they can to give assistance to the relief efforts and later to the work of rehabilitation.
