Free all political prisoners!

Dear fellow human rights defenders,

I would like to forward this Letter of Appeal and the factsheet of the illegal arrest of activist and human rights defender Zara Alvarez on Oct. 30, 2012 in Cadiz City , Philippines and the profile of Miss Zara Alvarez. She is currently detained in the BJMP Cadiz City , Negros Occidental together with political detainees Anecita Rojo and Elizar Nabas. The murder charge against them, believed to be fabricated, occurs in line with the many trumped-up charges filed against activists all over the country. Seven other Bacolod-based activists were recently implicated in the same case. Alvarez, Rojo and Nabas filed a Motion to Quash which is pending before the Regional Trial Court, Branch 60, Cadiz City . All three were illgally arrested (Anecita Rojo on Dec. 7, 2012 and Elizar Nabas on Jan. 24) for allegedly being members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and for their alleged involvelment in the murder of Philippine Army 1Lt Archie Polenzo on March 7, 2010.
Kindly include them in your documentation and help us in our efforts to raise international attention so that they be finally granted due process and a speedy resolution of their case!

In view of the renewed increase of trumped-up charges filed against activists in the Philippines , I also attach a newly published article by  my colleague Maike Grabowski from the Action Network Human Rights-Philippines (AMP) and me. Please feel free to circulate it.

If you have any question or need further information please don’t hestitate to contact me or the national office of the Philippine human rights alliance, KARAPATAN (publicinfo@karapatan.org)!

Thank you very much,

Hannah Wolf
